Time travel has always been thought to be impossible, but it was also known that, if indeed possible, the results would be marvelous or disastrous. When it happened, it ended up being both. The Great Rift occurred almost instantaneously, wiping out a third of the population in a series of chain reactions. A vengeful being misusing his discovery of time travel ventured to the past to exact a vendetta in the most gruesome of ways, removing his enemy's key ancestor. The result of this caused a third of the world's population, who's genes were spread from this man and his descendant's seed, to demolecularize into atoms which where then reabsorbed into the Universe. The World and Time were thrown into chaos. The surviving humans were able to find the location of the fool who had doomed them all, and the machine he had used to do so. "The eye is eternal. All shall fear the almighty eye, which sees all and knows all." He called out at his execution. With the menace gone, and his research notes saved, though he managed to damage enough of it to take some mysteries to his grave, the humans began to rebuild and understand. Time had been altered and it was the job of the survivors, those of the current, the Present, to now see to it that the Past and Future were governed so that no one could again abuse Time Travel. And so, the device the man used to once destroy the world now became what would save it. Inscribed at its base, the words the man spoke before his death, and taken from those words, the machine was then named. The Great Seer was created, the Augustus Gate and it's lesser gates were forged, and the Age of the Augustus Gate began.
The Age of the Augustus Gate brought vast understanding to the humans. They understood the mistakes that they were making on Earth, or what was left of it. Humans had always looked toward the stars, and it was to the stars that they found a new home. Although it is documented that the knowledge of terraforming, interplanetary space travel, solar-energy ships, and the all important Augustus Gate and its minor gates came from a mysterious savior that lead humanity through the darkness of The Great Rift, it was actually the knowledge left by the same man who destroyed them all that lead them to their next stage in life. Fearing the effects of overpopulation, but not wanting to yet leave their solar system, the humans decided on Jupiter as their new home. The terraforming of Jupiter was a feat that took one-hundred and fifty years, over one million causalities, and many trial-and-error situations that sometimes ended in incredible discoveries like the way to harness the gas that covered the planet, to complete disasters like a simple crack in a window that just so happened to also have faulty airlock safety mechanism would result in an accident that made the death toll of Smallpox look like a single digit number. They learned from their mistakes, like human's do, and from nothing, they formed the utopia unlike any human being of the past could imagine. Finally in the year 1077 AAG (After Augustus Gate), a thousand and seventy-seven years after The Great Rift, the humans were able to use their vast knowledge to once again access The Great Seer allowing them to see the real damage caused by The Great Rift. They found that Time had split itself into four segments, and when viewed from The Great Seer, each looked to be a planet orbiting the machine. They saw their own time, the always moving future, spinning before them and were amazed. Each world moved simultaneously and at the same rate, allowing those who passed through to move safely without worry of aging or bodily harm. After testing this theory with their own time, and deducing that the effect would be the same for each world, the engineers brought with them began work on putting into place the gates that would connect each of the worlds to The Great Seer, allowing whomever controlled the device to peer into each world without resistance or obstruction. Now the future would use its power and influence to govern Time as their ancestors who survived The Great Rift had always planned.
